What does the Bible say about spiritual warfare is one of the most-searched questions in Christian forums, often by people sensing real opposition in a season of obedience. The New Testament takes the reality seriously without making it the center of the Christian life.
Ephesians 6:10-18 is the definitive passage. Paul's metaphor of putting on the whole armor of God is not a magical formula — it's a description of how Christian truth, character, gospel, faith, and scripture together form a person who can stand. Notice what the armor is for: "to stand against the wiles of the devil," "having done all, to stand." The posture is resistance, not aggression.
James 4:7 and 1 Peter 5:8-9 give the same instruction: resist the devil, steadfast in the faith. The image is not chasing the enemy down — it's holding ground. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 says our weapons are not carnal but "mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds." Spiritual warfare is largely fought in the mind, through truth, prayer, scripture, repentance, and obedience.
The deepest assurance is Romans 8:31-39 — nothing can separate the believer from the love of God in Christ. And 1 John 4:4: "greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." The page below offers a prayer drawn directly from the armor of God. See also demons, fear, and faith.
Verses
Ephesians 6:10-18
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
1 Peter 5:8-9
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
1 John 4:4
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
Romans 8:31-39
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
