Bible verses about hell

Hell is one of the hardest topics in scripture. The Bible neither soft-pedals it nor centers it — Christ comes to save, not to threaten.

What does the Bible say about hell is one of the most searched and most dreaded questions about scripture, often asked by people grieving a loved one or fearing for themselves. The Bible's posture toward the question is striking. It does not avoid hell — Jesus says more about it than most teachers — but the heart of his message is not threat. John 3:17 is explicit: "God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."

Scripture's most repeated note on God's disposition toward judgment is 2 Peter 3:9: God is "not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." 1 Timothy 2:4 says he desires "all men to be saved." That orientation does not erase the seriousness of the Bible's warnings about final judgment (Matthew 25, Revelation 20), but it reframes them: God's heart pulls toward rescue, not damnation.

For believers afraid they've done something unforgivable: Romans 8:1 is unequivocal — "there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus." Salvation rests on Christ, not on the manner or quality of your final day. The historic Christian counseling position (echoed by Ligonier, Desiring God, and others) is that suicide is not the unpardonable sin.

If you've come here weighed down for a loved one, this page also offers a short prayer. The questions you can't answer in this life, you can entrust to a God whose love is described as wider, longer, higher, and deeper than you can fathom (Ephesians 3:18). Verses

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Romans 10:9-13

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Matthew 25:31-46

When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Revelation 20:11-15

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

1 Timothy 2:3-4

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
