Chronic pain is one of the loneliest forms of suffering — relentless, often invisible to others, and frequently underestimated by people who haven't carried it. Scripture takes seriously the suffering whose healing does not come.
Paul's account in 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 is the central text. He prayed three times for the removal of a thorn in his flesh. The thorn stayed. What he received instead was a word from Christ — "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness" — and a reframing of weakness as the place God's power becomes most visible. That is not a verse to hand someone in the first week of suffering. It is a verse to grow into across years.
Romans 8:18 holds the long view: "the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." Isaiah 40:29-31 names what God does for the worn down: he gives power to the faint and increases strength in those who have none. 1 Peter 5:10 promises that the God of all grace "after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you."
If you live with chronic illness, the church often does not know how to be with you. Find or build a small circle of people who can. Use the means God provides — doctors, medication, physical therapy, counseling, advocacy. Don't let well-meaning friends shame you into thinking your unhealed condition is a failure of faith. Paul's wasn't either. See also illness, suffering, and perseverance.
Verses
2 Corinthians 12:7-10
And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
Psalms 73:26
My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
Romans 8:18
For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
James 5:11
Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.
Isaiah 40:29-31
He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
1 Peter 5:10
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
